MLB With his performance on Sept. 23, Blue Jay Jose Bautista became the first player in the MLB with 100 walks, 100 runs scored, and 100 RBIs since 2011, when he last achieved the milestone. Bautista achieved the mark after tallying three runs, a walk, and a double as the Blue Jays lit up American League Cy Young favourite Felix Hernandez for eight runs in a 10–2 rout against the floundering Seattle Mariners. Bautista’s success comes as the Jays again miss the postseason after a disappointing end to their season. Nelson Cruz of the Baltimore Orioles hit his 40th homerun of the season Tuesday against the New York Yankees. Cruz is the sixth Oriole in history to hit the 40-homerun mark in a season. Cruz was also recently named the most valuable Oriole in his first season with the team. The Orioles won the AL East division for the first time since 1997. NFL The Minnesota Vikings announced their quarterback, Matt Cassel, is done for the season. Cassel broke bones in his left foot early in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. He is currently on injury reserve. Backup QB Teddy Bridgewater will make his first NFL start Sept. 28, and is likely to replace Cassel as the starter for the rest of the season. The rookie came into the game against the Saints for Cassel, going 12 of 20 for 150 yards, and running 27 yards in the 20–9 loss. “It’s not the way that I wanted it to happen, but I’m still going to have to take advantage of this opportunity,” Bridgewater told ESPN. “It’s one thing to be named the guy, but for me I want to continue to just be the guy for a long time.” Cassel’s injury has added on to a troubling start to the season for Minnesota: guard Brandon Fuso is also on the IR after a pectoral injury in the same game against the Saints. Superstar running back Adrian Peterson’s ongoing suspension over child abuse charges is also weakening the team’s starting lineup. NHL Jordan Staal, centre for the Carolina Hurricanes, broke his leg in a pre-season game in Buffalo Sept. 23. The injury occurred when Staal was checked into the boards by Sabres defenceman Josh Gorges. There is yet to be a timetable established for Staal’s recovery. Golf The 40th Ryder Cup starts Sept. 26 in Scotland and will continue until Sept. 28. The United States team includes Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, and Hunter Mahan. This year is expected to be a close match.
