The Waterloo Warriors women’s basketball squad hosted the Carleton Ravens Nov. 22 at the PAC. After a hard-fought match between both squads, the Ravens came out on top 63–58.

Waterloo came out of the lockerroom strong and determined to take the first quarter. The Warriors drew first blood, but Carleton would go up on a 6–2 lead before Waterloo called in its first timeout.

A good part of the first period saw both squads play strong defensive basketball. The Warriors were good at keeping the Ravens under check. By the end of the first quarter the Warriors led 16–14.

During the second quarter, Waterloo maintained their lead against the Ravens: Jacqui Rodrigues would put the Warriors at 25 points at the 4:02 mark. Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, Carleton managed to tie the game to 25 with 1:23 remaining in the half. Carleton then worked their way up to 29 points, but Amy Jarvis gave Waterloo the tie going into the second half of the game.

The third quarter saw the Warriors become more determined to secure the game by working a 35–33 lead, but the scrappy Ravens tied the game once more at the 7:47 mark. Waterloo maintained their two-point lead with six minutes remaining.

Waterloo worked another four-point lead with 4:32 left on the clock, but the Ravens tied the game at 44 with two minutes remaining. Carleton turned the tables and took the third quarter lead with a 48–44 score going into the final quarter.

Waterloo went into the last period losing 48–44. The Warriors were sluggish and didn’t seize the chances Carleton gave them to score, instead they struggled defensively and gave up fouls and free shots to the Ravens who led 51–44.

The Ravens kept adding points to their lead, achieving a 51–44 lead by the middle of the fourth quarter. Jenel Ulman tied the game at 53 points with 4:36 minutes remaining, after another tie at 55 points. But Carleton’s Lindsey Suprunchuk killed any comeback hopes for the Warriors with two impressive shots, putting Carleton up 63–56 with just over 30 seconds remaining. The Ravens missed four free-throws down the stretch, but the Warriors couldn’t capitalize. Carleton took the game with a 63–58 victory.

The Warriors’ top scorers were Madison Behr with 12 points, and Marti Killeen with 11. Amy Jarvis contributed  10 points of her own. Ally Vonk had eight rebounds for the Warriors.

With the loss, Waterloo dropped to 1–5 on the season and sit in fourth place in the OUA West. Carleton improves to 3–3 and second place in OUA North. Waterloo will host division rival Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
